Formula & method
A = P(1 + r/n)^(n×t) + contributions grown the same way, where P is principal, r the annual rate, n the compounding frequency and t the years.
Worked example
$10,000 at 5% compounded monthly for 10 years grows to about $16,470.09 without contributions. Adding $100 a month raises it to roughly $34,000.
FAQ
- What does compounding frequency change?
- More frequent compounding grows slightly faster, but the rate and time matter far more than monthly vs yearly compounding.
- Is the result guaranteed?
- No. It assumes a fixed rate and no fees or taxes. Real investments vary.
- Why does time matter so much?
- Growth is exponential: the last years add far more than the first years, which is why starting early beats starting big.
